Most boat owners assume a repair means a haul-out by default, because that's how it works at a traditional shop. In the Lower Keys, that assumption costs you time and money on jobs that never needed a yard in the first place. Here's the honest breakdown of which is which.
What can mobile marine service actually fix at the dock?
Most of what breaks on a boat can be diagnosed and repaired without pulling it from the water: engine diagnostics and no-start troubleshooting, scheduled maintenance (100- and 300-hour service), fuel system cleaning and repair, lower unit and gear case work, marine electrical of every kind, and most powerhead and cooling system repairs. A mobile technician with the right diagnostic equipment and common parts on the truck handles the large majority of service calls in a single dockside visit.
What genuinely requires a haul-out?
A haul-out is the right call for below-the-waterline hull work, bottom paint, running gear replacement that requires the propeller shaft or outdrive to be pulled clear of the water, through-hull fitting replacement, and structural hull repair. If the work requires the boat to be physically out of the water to access it safely, that's a haul-out job — no way around it, and we'll tell you straight when that's the case.
Why does hauling a boat cost more than most people expect?
A haul-out isn't just the lift fee. It's the tow or trailer to get the boat to the yard, the yard's daily storage rate while it waits in a queue, and the schedule risk of the boat sitting for days or weeks longer than the actual repair takes — all before a wrench touches the actual problem. Mobile service skips every one of those costs for the repairs that don't need a yard.
Does mobile service take longer or shorter than a shop visit?
For jobs within mobile scope, it's almost always faster. There's no tow, no drop-off, no waiting in a shop's queue behind other boats — the technician diagnoses and repairs on-site, often the same visit. The trade-off runs the other way for haul-out-only jobs: those take exactly as long as they'd take at any yard, because the physical constraint (the boat has to be out of the water) doesn't change based on who's doing the work.
Is mobile repair lower quality than shop repair?
No — the standard of the work depends on the technician's training and equipment, not the location. Our lead technician holds Mercury Marine Certified Technician and ABYC Certified Master Technician credentials, and we bring the same diagnostic tools (including Mercury's CDS G3 platform) that a dealership uses. The dock isn't a compromise; it's where the boat already is.
How do you know which one your problem needs before you call?
If you're not sure, describe the symptom when you call — a no-start, an electrical issue, an engine noise, a leak — and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a dockside job or a haul-out, before you commit to either. We'd rather send you to the right solution than pretend every job fits our truck.
Keep your boat in the water for everything that doesn't need a yard
The Lower Keys don't have a shop on every corner, and hauling a boat here costs real time and money. For the repairs that don't require it, mobile service gets you back on the water faster. See Engine Repair & Overhaul and Services for the full scope of what we handle dockside.
